![]() Why submit to crushing reality as someone deemed inadequate by society when there is an alternative that lets you have a perfect body, be a god in your own domain, control great wealth, have sex with supermodels, and make friends with outcasts like yourself? Wouldn’t you rather embrace that fantasy? All MMOs encourage this kind of pretend to some extent, but the moddable, open-ended, free-form nature of Second Life amplifies that encouragement. This phenomenon is unsurprising, considering Second Life’s nature. Of that majority, a significant portion is autistic. ![]() The UsersĪ large number of the people who use second life today could be classified as outcasts: mentally ill folks, poor people, fanatics, perverts, and geeks of all stripes easily make up a majority of the userbase. You can find interesting people there if you’re willing to submit yourself to the inevitable and irreversible corruption of spirit. Then there are the fandom, fetish, and sex worlds. Other worlds are populated mostly by accounts created en masse to be used as bots or to artificially inflate the worlds’ visitor numbers. Large clubs and formerly popular worlds are now empty, forlorn places. Second Life attracted a million users by 2013, but has since slowly faded into obscurity. In it’s time it was revolutionary, allowing players to craft their own digital domains, and introducing a virtual currency called Lindens, which represent real monetary value. Second Life is a massively multiplayer virtual world that came online back in 2003.
